Chapter 7

Almost Alone for the Night

(Name) nervously held onto her (fave drink) while we Matthew calmly sipped at his maple coffee.

"So, my brother and his friends have been bullying you since freshmen year, huh?" He asked, looking up at her. His violet eyes meeting her nervous (e/c) eyes.

"Yeah..." She murmured.

"How come you haven't told anyone?"

"Like I told Tino and his friends... I can't make more trouble for my brother. He's busy enough as it is, and I can't make it worse for him by having him worry about me and my problems." (Name) replied, taking a sip of her drink.

Matthew met her gaze again, searching for answers. "You can't let this go on, they're really going to hurt you if this keeps on."

She shrugged, averting his gaze and staring into her drink. "It's been happening for over two years, two more won't kill me."

"You don't know that." He protested. "People who get bullied, they change." He paused for a moment. "They get depressed, they get ideas, and they do things that are really dangerous... Sometimes they go through with those things and they don't come back."

The girl sighed. She rolled up her sleeves, revealing her arms. She held them up, showing Matthew the soft, unscarred skin. She took her purse and emptied it out onto the café table, showing that nothing sharp or narcotic fell out. The Canadian looked up at her, somewhat questioningly.

"I'm not like those people, Matthew. Those people who try to drive away their pain with self-mutilation, people who try to end it by just leaving everything how it is." She murmured softly.

Matthew sighed softly. "But still, you should go to someone. Your brother, the principle, someone who can stop this."

"No one can stop it, though!" (Name) exclaimed. "All it could do by going to someone would making it a whole lot worse! If I told the principle, he would contact my parents and they would take me away from Louis. It's been so awkward around them since the divorce, if I had to live with one of them instead of Louis, I'd hardly see him anymore... I don't want to leave him... Not like that."

Matthew watched as (Name) gripped onto her cup, her knuckles whitening from the pressure. Her eyes remained casted downward, ignoring the Canadian's attempts to make eye contact. He sighed softly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a phone with a Canadian flag case.

He placed it in front of the girl, causing her to look up. "Put your number in my phone, and I'll do the same with yours." He spoke softly.

(Name) complied quickly, pulling her phone out and handing it to the boy. It didn't take her long to put in her number and return the case to Matthew. He did the same, smiling at her.

"Now, you have two people to vent to." He said.

The (h/c) girl nodded, taking her phone back and seeing yet another new contact in her phone. "Matthew, you know that you can't tell anyone, right? Please, it will make things easier for everyone..."

Reluctantly, the Canadian nodded. "Yeah, I won't tell."

"Promise me. You have to promise me." She insisted, staring straight into his violet eyes.

"O-okay, I promise." Matthew replied, his curled hair drooping slightly.

Smiling thankfully, (Name) took her drink into her hand and stood, grabbing her bag and slinging it over her shoulder. "Thank you, Matthew. I need to get going." She spoke softly before heading out of the small café.

As she walked, (Name) couldn't help but feel a sense of uneasiness eat away at her. Should I really have trusted him with this? I don't even know him that well, so for all I know, he could have been lying... She thought as she walked down the sidewalk of the town, making her way to her neighborhood.

Making her way to her house, she saw that Louis' car wasn't in the driveway. He must have been working late that night. Shrugging, she opened the door to her home, walking inside and going to the living room. It was usually just for her to collapse after a long day, just plop down on the couch and maybe take a short nap, if not just relax for a short bit before starting homework.

A vibration from her pocket caught (Name)'s attention. She shifted slightly and pulled out her phone, seeing that she received a text from the friendly Finnish boy.

Wanted to check on you~ : )

She small text brought a slight smile to the girl's lips. She replied, moving her fingers to type the response.

Just got home, probably going to be spending the night alone, tho

She put her phone down for a moment, sitting up and running a hand through her hair. Not a minute later, her text tone went off again. Tino had responded.

Aw! How come? D':>

Picking up her phone again, she replied.

The bro's at work. Won't be home 'till later probably

Doesn't that get a bit lonely?

It's been like this for a while, I'm used to it.

(Name) went to the kitchen to fix herself a quick helping of (fave snack food) when her phone went off again.

You got a Skype?

The question seemed rather odd, but she replied.

Yeah, I use it to talk to my parents sometimes.

Why don't we video chat, then? Give me your screen name and I'll request to add you.

Taking her bowl of (fave snack), (Name) went up to her room and powered on her laptop. She logged into her Skype and sent Tino a text of her screen name. As she nibbled on her snack, a request from the screen name "SantaisReal" popped up on her screen.

Laughing softly at the screen name, the (h/c) girl accepted the request. Not even a moment later, a call was coming in from the Santa loving Finnish boy. Accepting the call, the image of said Finnish boy appeared on her screen.

"Good evening, (Name)!" Tino chirped happily.

She smiled back at him, leaning back in her desk chair. "Hey, Tino."

"So, all alone tonight, huh?" He asked, shifting in his sitting position on his bed.

She nodded. "Yeah, my brother's been working on this case, and it's really tiring him out. But he does need to get his work done."

"Mm. I can understand that." Tino agreed, nodding slightly. He smiled at her, though. "Well then, you can spend the night chatting with me and Hana!"

"Hana?" (Name) asked.

"My dog, Hanatamago." He replied. He turned his head and whistled. Soon, the sound of an approaching animal rang through the speakers, and a few barks echoed through as well. A small, white blur of fluff jumped into Tino's lap, causing the Finnish teen to laugh.

"(Name), this is Hana. Hana, this is my friend (Name)." Tino spoke, turning the white dog to face the screen, waving one of her paws at the camera.

The girl laughed softly and waved back at the small creature. "Hi there, Hana."

The small dog barked in reply, her small tail wagging as she sat in Tino's lap.

~~~
The two talked for what seemed like hours on end. (Name) explained to Tino her family situation, how she could only stay with Louis if he was proven to be a good guardian. She told him about how long she had been bullied at the school, and reminded him why she couldn't go to anyone. She also told him about her encounters with Matthew and Heracles, mentioning how she and Matthew met after Tino left with Lukas, Berwald, and Emil.
"So, do you think he's telling the truth?" Tino asked.
"I don't know. I haven't known him for that long, plus, he's Alfred's brother..."
"Well, I know for a fact that he's really quiet. He also spends a lot of time hanging around Alfred and his friends, Arthur, Francis, Yao, and Ivan. Though, he always seems like he's the outsider. Like, they had forgotten he was there." Tino mused to her.
"Really? He and Alfred seem close, though."
The Finnish boy nodded. "Yeah, but not all siblings are close. Like Lukas and Emil."
(Name) blinked in surprise. "They're brothers?"
"Yeah, Emil is Lukas' younger brother. Hard to believe, huh?" Tino asked with a soft laugh.
The girl nodded. Jumping slightly at the sound of a door opening downstairs, she looked out her bedroom window to see Louis' car had already pulled up into the drive way. "Louis is home." She told her friend.
"Oh, alright then! How about you text me tomorrow, okay?" He suggested.
"Sure thing, Tino." (Name) replied. "Good night."
"Have a good night, (Name)." The teen responded before he ended the call.
(Name) made her way downstairs and watched as her brother plopped down onto the couch, sighing out of exhaustion.
"Tough day at work?" She asked him, walking over to the elder sibling.
Louis nodded, running a hand through his (h/c) hair. "I just got a case dumped on me, and a miserable one at that."
"What's it about?"
Louis looked over at his younger sister, but sighed again. "Teen suicide, a girl was being bullied and it got so bad she killed herself... They're trying the bullies for her murder, and I'm going to be prosecuting them."  He explained, sitting up and loosening his tie.
The description of the case made (Name)'s blood run cold. She knew bullying could drive some kids to suicide, but she never thought of it as an option. She wasn't going to give her bullies the satisfaction of getting rid of her for good.
"That's terrible..." She murmured.
"Yeah, don't have to tell me twice." Agreed the man, standing from his seat to the couch and going to the kitchen. "You wanna cook something, or do you wanna order take-out that I'll go pick up?" He asked her, opening the fridge to see what could be cooked.
"Take-out's good." She replied, striding back to the stairs. "I have homework to get done, so I'll see you when you get back?"
"Sure." He answered, his back still turned. (Name) was already almost to the top of the steps when she heard him call out to her. "Hey! I didn't ask how school was today!"
It was something the siblings always did. They would ask one another how their day went, it was a tradition at the house. If one of them didn't ask, they would end up doing the dishes.
"Fine! No bad grades, all good grades!" She answered.
"Define 'good grades'!"
"All A's!!"
Louis laughed softly, loud enough for (Name) to hear. "Good... Oh! Allistor gave me a call today after he subbed for your chemistry class! He told me that you were at the top of the class!"
(Name) nodded, listening to her brother. "Alright, thanks for letting me know!"
"Just keep it up, kiddo!" He called one last time before shutting the fridge and going to the phone to order food from a popular Chinese restaurant in town.
The teen made her way back to her room, closing the door behind her as she went to her desk to do her homework. Grabbing her phone and earbuds from her bed, she plugged in the buds and put her phone on shuffle, listening to Green Day as she pulled out her homework.
Do you know what's worth fighting for
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?
Does the pain weight out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins
She wrote her answers for her Chemistry homework down as she listened to the lyrics and strumming of guitar strings. The song was good and all, but (Name) couldn't help but feel as if she had a deeper connection to the song. If she did, she didn't pay any mind to it.
One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I
Putting her Chemistry away, (Name) pulled out her Latin home work, and began writing down the conjugation for the Latin word rex.
When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul
Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins
As she replaced her Latin homework with her History, the song played on. (Name) listened to every lyric, every chord, and every beat.
One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I
Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone
The song was interrupted by her phone vibrating from the text that (Name) had received. Pausing the song and unlocking her phone, (Name) saw a picture had been sent from Tino. Opening the message, the girl smiled at the sight of the small white dog, wagging her tail just a white blur from wagging out of happiness.
Hana wanted to say good night, (Name)! See you rand at school tomorrow!
The girl smiled and replied quickly.
You too, Tino. Say good night to Hana for me.
After sending the text, (Name) put the song back on play and continued her History homework.
When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins
She soon finished her homework, all of it. She had already started most of it in school, so it only took minutes for her to finish. Of course, she still had Ivan's work to do, work that she went ahead and started.
She had to do his work for his History class and his Geometry class. Both were easy enough. Though, (Name) had to wonder.
If Ivan had her doing work for his two classes, who did the work for his other classes?
Brushing the thought off, she continued to write down the quadratic equation. She continued to listen to the Green Day song, hearing as the last lyrics played.
One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I
After finishing Ivan's work, (Name) packed up her school work. Sitting on her bed, she sighed out of exhaustion. School was tiring, but it was even more tiring keeping up a whole act. Pretending she was a normal, happy teenager. But now, with other people knowing her situation, like Matthew and Tino, and Tino's friends... She had to pour herself out to them. She had to make sure they promised not to tell anyone about her and her situation.
Laying back on her bed, she stared up at the ceiling. Closing her eyes, she rested her tired mind, waiting for Louis to call her down for dinner.
